Continuing Education Policies

1. Course Title: Memories in the Making: Facilitating Art for Persons with Dementia

2. Course Description:
Learn about behavior and communication changes associated with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia, and techniques for how to understand and respond appropriately to these changes. An overview of the Memories in the Making art program is provided, including the many benefits it offers to participants and how it can be adapted for individuals at any stage of memory loss. Through this program, participants with diminished verbal and organizational skills communicate through artistic expression by creating drawings and pictures. Training is provided for how to implement the program in a residential care facility and how to successfully facilitate the Memories in the Making art sessions.

3. Course Objectives:

    1. Recognize changes in behaviors and communication associated with dementia
    2. Practice techniques that improve communication with Memories in the Making participants who have dementia
    3. Describe how artistic expression can be a communication tool for people with dementia
    4. Discuss the basic steps involved in facilitating a Memories in the Making class for residents with dementia

4. Instructors:

  • Ben Allen, Memories in the Making Coordinator, Alzheimer’s Orange County. Since 2012, Ben has been involved with Alzheimer’s Orange County, presenting various education programs on topics related to dementia, and coordinating the Memories in the Making program.
  • Melissa Klaeb, DPT, Director of Education, Alzheimer’s Orange County. Dr. Klaeb is a licensed Physical Therapist with eight years of experience caring for a family member with dementia. She has completed coursework on the topic of dementia care, and oversees all educational offerings at Alzheimer’s Orange County as the Director of Education.
  • Kim Bailey, MSG, Programs and Education Specialist, Alzheimer’s Orange County. Kim holds a Master of Science in Gerontology and has worked in the field of gerontology as a lecturer and professional for thirty years. She is responsible for developing and presenting the organization’s education and support programs for individuals and families living with Alzheimer’s disease.

5. Target Audience:
This course is designed for both senior care professionals and family caregivers who provide care and assistance for older adults and persons with dementia.

6. Instructions for Requesting Accommodations for a Disability:
Alzheimer’s Orange County will make every effort to provide reasonable accommodations for individuals with disabilities. In circumstances when courses are offered at offsite locations, accommodations will be coordinated with that site to the best of our ability.

7. Continuing Education Grievance Policy:
The Education Department at Alzheimer’s Orange County is dedicated to providing quality, affordable continuing education to various professionals throughout the community.  In an effort to meet the needs and expectations of our constituents, there is a process in place for a course participant who has a specific concern to voice his/her complaint.

A record of each complaint or grievance and its resolution is kept by the Education Director and reported with the CEU provider application and renewal.

8. Refund/Cancellation Policy
If a fee is charged for this course, full refunds will be given if requested at least seven (7) days in advance of the event. To request a refund, please send an e-mail to the education coordinator at: learn@alzoc.org

9. Continuing Education Certificates of Completion
Course participants who earn a Certificate of Completion will either be awarded the certificate at the completion of the course, or by e-mail within 14 days of the event, upon verification of all CE requirements being met.

10. Alzheimer’s Orange County is an approved continuing education provider for the following professionals:

CAMFT/BBS: This course meets the qualifications for 3 hours of continuing education credit as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. Alzheimer’s Orange County (AlzOC) is approved by the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (CAMFT) to sponsor continuing education for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and/or LEPs. AlzOC maintains responsibility for this program and its content.
