Extremis Film Screening & Conversation Cafe™ with Expert Panel

Join us for a Conversation Café ™ with Dr. Bill Hoy and Patty Barnett Mouton for: Extremis: Conversing with Patients at End-of-Life

In this interactive workshop, we will be guided in viewing and reacting to Extremis, a provocative 24-minute documentary about patients, families, and physicians working together at the border between life and death. Extremis follows several patients and families, focusing on two—one who “wants everything done” and one who, after a gutwrenching hospitalization, decides to withdraw artificial ventilation. After viewing the film, our presenters will lead us in a conversation
about ways that we as professionals and volunteers get engaged in discussing the dying process with patients and their loved ones, while discovering proven strategies for having these conversations. In this dynamic, interactive workshop, we will learn better not only to have these conversations with our patients and their families but with our own families and friends, as well. At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be able to…

  • Explain the impact of end-of-life conversations on patient wellbeing and family interaction
  • Utilize strategies for engaging in conversations about end-of-life
    options
  • Discuss ways to engage with individuals whose choices create moral distress for us
