Research/Clinical Trials

Clinical trials are research studies that evaluate the effectiveness of newly developed tests and treatments for various health conditions. Not all clinical trials are medicine-based. Some focus on lifestyle factors, observation, or caregiver stress.

Clinical trials advance medical knowledge and better the understanding of human health. They also provide early access to new treatments which may be more effective than current treatments.

Yes. Patient safety is the top priority and clinical trials are closely monitored by ethics committees and overseen by medical professionals. Before joining a study, you’ll receive detailed information about the clinical trial, including its purpose, potential risks, and possible benefits, so you can make an informed decision. Throughout the study, participants are closely monitored, and you may choose to leave the trial at any time for any reason.
Every study is different, however most studies include a screening process to determine eligibility, regular study visits, health assessments, and follow-up appointments. During your clinical trial, the research team will guide you through the process and answer any additional questions or concerns.

Living With Your Disease

Seek support, plan for what’s ahead and continue to stay active and do your best to maintain a healthy routine. Maintain social connections and work with your family, healthcare team, and others that can help–like Alzheimer’s Orange County–to support your quality of life after a diagnosis.
Planning ahead can make future decisions easier. Consider discussing care preferences, legal and financial planning, and available support services with your loved ones and healthcare providers. The earlier you start, the easier you make it for you and your loved ones in the future.
Patience, understanding, clear communication, and encouraging independence whenever possible can make a meaningful difference. Learn about the disease process to better understand those affected and be more effective in supporting them. Helping loved ones understand the complexities of the disease can also provide better guidance and support. Sharing the responsibility of caring for a loved one makes it easier for everyone especially the primary caregiver. Remember, education leads to empowerment.
