This class explores the relationship between technology use, attention, memory, and cognitive health across the lifespan. Participants will examine the origins and limitations of the term “digital dementia,” review current evidence on technology use and cognitive outcomes in older adults, and learn how digital tools can function as external memory supports for individuals with mild cognitive impairment or early dementia. The course will also address practical and ethical considerations, including cognitive offloading, notification overload, sleep disruption, privacy, autonomy, and the role of professionals and caregivers in supporting intentional technology use.’

At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:

1. Differentiate between the popular concept of “digital dementia” and clinically recognized forms of cognitive decline.

2. Describe how technology can affect memory and attention through cognitive offloading, multitasking, interruptions, and sleep disruption.

3. Identify practical, person-centered strategies for using technology intentionally with older adults, caregivers, and individuals with cognitive impairment.
