Music is a powerful, evidence-based intervention that can meaningfully improve quality of life for individuals living with dementia while also supporting caregivers and care teams. This course explores the neuroscience behind music engagement and its unique ability to access preserved emotional and autobiographical memory, regulate mood and arousal, and support communication and connection. Participants will examine research-supported outcomes of personalized music interventions, including reductions in distress behaviors, medication use, and caregiver stress. The course emphasizes practical, ethical, and cost-effective strategies for integrating music into daily care routines across home, community, and long-term care settings.
At completion of the course, participants will be able to:
- Identify how personalized music engagement supports individuals living with dementia
- Apply music-based strategies to enhance person-centered dementia care
- Evaluate the impact of musical interventions on quality of life and caregiver well-being
