Behavioral changes such as agitation, aggression, and resistance to care are common in dementia but are often expressions of unmet needs rather than simply symptoms of the disease. This course explores the underlying causes of behavioral expressions and reviews evidence-based, non-pharmacological strategies that can help prevent and manage these behaviors. Participants will learn how factors such as pain, discomfort, environment, and communication challenges can influence behavior in people living with dementia. Practical tools and real-world examples will help caregivers and professionals respond more effectively while supporting dignity, comfort, and person-centered care.

At completion of the course, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify at least three evidence-based non-pharmacological interventions used to prevent or reduce behavioral expressions in people living with dementia
  2. Explain why pain is frequently underrecognized in individuals with dementia
  3. Recognize common behavioral indicators of pain in cognitively impaired older adults
