Older adults—particularly those living with cognitive impairment, are at increased risk for abuse, neglect, and exploitation, yet many cases go unrecognized or unreported. This course provides a comprehensive overview of elder and dependent adult abuse, equipping participants with the knowledge to identify warning signs, understand reporting responsibilities, and take appropriate action. Participants will explore the roles of Adult Protective Services (APS) and the Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program in protecting vulnerable adults, with emphasis on resident rights, dignity, and self-determination. Through awareness, advocacy, and action, participants will gain practical strategies to respond effectively and support safer care environments.
At completion of the course, participants will be able to:
1. Identify types of elder and dependent adult abuse and associated indicators
2. Describe the roles of APS and the Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program
3. Explain mandated reporting requirements and procedures
