This National Relaxation Day, we honor you. Whether you’re a caregiver or living with memory loss, you deserve moments of calm. Even small steps toward relaxation can lead to big shifts in how we feel, connect, and care.
In honor of National Relaxation Day, here’s how to pause, breathe, and recharge with compassion.
1. Try a Guided Breathing Exercise
You don’t need an hour-long meditation session to reset. Just a few minutes of focused breathing can lower stress hormones and bring clarity. Use our Caregiver Breathing Techniques Topic Sheet from our website to help guide you through four different breathing exercises: 4-7-8 Breathing, Pursed Lip Breathing, Diaphragmatic Breathing, and Shoulder Roll Breathing.
2. Get Outside (Even Just to the Porch)
Natural light and fresh air are powerful mood boosters. A short walk, some light stretching in the garden, or simply sitting together with your loved one outside can reduce agitation and increase a sense of well-being.
3. Create a Soothing Soundscape
Gentle music can calm nerves and even spark joyful memories in people with dementia. Try nature sounds or old favorites from their younger years. Keep it soft, familiar, and unrushed.
4. Ask for Help. That’s Self-Care Too
You don’t have to do it all alone. Reaching out for support is one of the most important forms of self-care. Alzheimer’s Orange County offers respite care, support groups, and a warm, listening ear.
